Some of my movie collection - A Mixture of All Regions in DVD & Bluray

Some of my movie collection – A Mixture of All Regions in DVD & Bluray

It seems there’s a bit of problem getting some of the best Martial Arts movies out there on Blu-ray or even just DVD in smaller countries (and even bigger ones).  Here in Australia, a lot of the movies reviewed on this site are impossible to get a hold of locally, plus they cost 3 or 4 times the amount of overseas movies, so I can just hop onto Amazon can get it delivered for a fraction of the cost.  They simply don’t sell over here because it’s not a huge market.Even in the UK certain titles are harder to come by, this is why I’ve always gone out of my way to go Region free.

Every country as a few shortcomings when it comes to movie selection. So here’s a bit of why and how to go region free!

Region Free Blu-rays and DVDs

So doing a bit of study it seems going Region Free is quite easy – much easier than buying a whole new player in some cases!  I learned this when searching for Undisputed 3 on Blu-ray and found it was only available in America, but that it wasn’t region coded and worked in any Blu-Ray player.  In fact – a large percentage of movies on Blu-ray have no region coding whatsoever!  DVDs not so much, you can bet they’re all region coded.

Finding Blu-ray movies that are Region Free is quite easy (I usually try to point out which ones when I review them), but you can access a few lists online  (like regionfreemovies.com) that give you a pretty good rundown of most movies.  Unfortunately the region locked movies still require a region free player.

Getting Your Hands on a Region Free Player

There are plenty of places that’ll chip an existing player to make it region free, but why bother?  There are a few good ones out on the market as it is and you don’t have to modify them and void the warranty.  Depending on where you are from it might be as simple as saving a little extra dosh and making the buy.

Some are Region free when you switch them on, others require you to change region manually or even enter a code.  Either way it’s a pretty simple way to go.

Finding Region Free players isn’t as simple as heading down town and picking one up at the local department store, they (annoyingly) make it much harder!  But there are some very flexible solutions

International Region Free Players

Most Region Free Players have world-wide voltage with PAL & NTSC playback – that means you can use it in any country on any TV, but you may need to switch the power cord plug over, but that’s relatively easy to do, you can find power plug adapters on Amazon.  So the following  should work for anyone looking to go Region Free, but always do your homework before buying:

Seiki Region Free

Seiki Multi Region BluRay/DVD Player

This player plays all regions and has world wide voltage – so it’s one of the most flexible options out there.  When you receive this player the DVD region is set to ‘0’ (all regions), whilst the Blu-Ray region is entered by inputting a code (which when bought from Amazon here,  comes with the player  – with a sticker on the back of the remote).  Check out the product listing for reviews and more info.

OREI Region Free

OREI BDP-M1 Region Free DVD 3D/2D Blu-Ray Player

If you want to go 3D, this could be your choice.  OREI have made a few different Region Free players available online.  It has world wide voltage, and supposedly plays from region free from Boot-up (I haven’t personally seen this player, but I’ve read a few good things).  As usual, do your homework and check out the product listing for more info and reviews.

If you prefer a bigger brand name player, then you’ve got the Toshiba.  Non-modified, with the ability to switch regions with the remote control (full details are in the manual).  However may may need to check whether or not the voltage will work for your country – will work in the US.
