District 13 UltimatumDistrict 13 Ultimatum is the sequel to the French action film District B13, set some years after the events of the first movie.

Once again, some corrupt government higher power wants to blow up District 13…  well, a handful of buildings not so much the whole area.

The plan to make this happen includes a group of men working for the President. They have their own agenda, killing a car of cops and dropping it off in District 13 and provoking an attack – framing the people of District 13 as cop killers.  They then try to persuade the President, who has the best interests of the district in mind, to blow up 5 main buildings believed to contain most of the weapons and drugs in the area.

In order to pull it off, they put away the honest cop named Damien (yes, a main character played by Cyril Raffaelli), to prevent him from interfering with their plan.

What could go wrong?

Well a small videotaping of the real police shooting was taken by some undetected teenagers nearby and has been passed onto Leito (David Belle), shortly after he receives a message from Damien (who managed to forcefully steal a guards phone) telling him to help him out of this prison.

So naturally Leito takes the video, frees Damien and they do the whole Parkour / Martial Arts thing and gather up some info to shutdown the corrup members of the Government and save many from possibly dieing in District 13.

Compared to the First?

The same feel, look and general flow of the original film are all pretty much there, but something is missing.  It just doesn’t have the same charm as the first film.

In the first film it was the government, now its a small group within the government.  In the first the whole district was going up, this time just a few buildings.  The stakes are lower,  and it seems the overall quality and pace is also a bit lower.

It is, however, still a good action film.  The characters are unique and so is the setting.  The contrast of street tough and  clean cop working together seems to be a good mix but this movie is mainly about the action and not so much the story or  characters.

The Action & Martial Arts

This setting is perfect for the skills of Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle.

The martial arts action has been turned up a few notches in terms of quality.  Cyril Raffaelli is putting more into his fight scenes and making them more intersting by showing off a wide variety of stylistic movements and different fight scenarios.

David Belles Parkour abilities are somewhat toned down.  In the first film we meet him with a fast and furious chase, in this film his running sequences are about 70% of what they were in the first film – pretty unimpressive by comparison.

Overall the action doesn’t have the same weight and impressive nature as the first film, and even seems to dwindle away at the end of the movie, as opposed to being built up into one awesome finale.

It’s still a good action movie, but not as good as the first.  So if you’ve seen District B13, don’t start watching this movie expecting the same quality as the first.
