Enter the Fat DragonFans of Sammo and fans of Bruce can unite as we get to see Sammo Hung’s take on the legendary Bruce Lee – by way of parody!

Sammo Hung plays Ah Lung, a young kid and Bruce Lee fanatic who has to move to the big city and help his uncle with his cafe/business.  Ah Lung is totally obsessed though, he fights bullies, poses at any spare minute and walks, talks and acts like his Idol – Bruce Lee.

Unfortunately his willingess to fight start to bring some trouble to his uncle’s business and things get complicated as a local gang starts to respond to his behaviour after he beats a group of men up for not paying.

Along with all of this, Ah Lung is fired from his uncles business and is forced to get a job elsewhere, so we see a series of events unfold where his Bruce Lee impersonation makes things very ‘interesting’ for him and his friends.

Sammo’s take on Bruce Lee

This film shares a similar title to Enter the Dragon, but is actually closer in likeness to Way of the Dragon.  The country bumpkin comes to the big city and does good – only this time the ‘good’ gets him into trouble in a serious and sometimes humorous way.

Sammo’s ability to mimic Bruce is scary, and even for a heavier set guy he sometimes has you checking twice!  He thumbs the nose, does the poses, the facial expressions and even has the same build up and explosive jump into action Bruce used in his on screen fights.

Bruce vs Ah Lung

I find it interesting that no one in the film made a joke about him pretending to be Bruce Lee, but his character definitely embodies the spirit.  He even beats up a Brucesploitation actor in one scene!

The movie is pretty much a  straight up comedy with some top action mixed into it.  We see Ah lung destroying a car he believes to be owned by one of the gang members when it’s owned by his boss, along with some other awkward situations an casting choices / characters.

By casting choices I’m referring to the African American karate Expert – played by a Chinese guy.  This was  a move to parody and make a statement on the stupidity of Hollywood casting Caucasian actors as Asian people with ridiculous make up to give the appearance.  So we get a Chinese guy with a face painted black in response to that!  I cracked up when I realized what I was looking at!

The Action & Martial Arts

Despite the comedic nature of the film, the movie has some really nice fights.

Sammo knows his shit, and he has made the fight scenes hard hitting and fun, while his character mimics Bruce Lee in just about every movement, step and breath of the fight scenes.  What’s funny is how the moves are pulled off and the villains even fall like Bruce Lee’s stunt men!  Queue the big pause and the slow drop, aided by the pushing hand of Ah Lung!

But the fights are fast and Bruces movements are copied perfectly, making for a mixture of both funny and exciting action.

The Verdict?

Must see for Bruce Lee fans.  Funny stuff!
