Green Street 3 - Never Back DownImagine if Soccer Hooligans weren’t just wild and crazy (in a good way 😉 )but instead knew martial arts and were shockingly effective fighters – you’d have the characters in this film!

Green Street 3: Never Back Down is the third film in the Green Street Hooligans film franchise which centers around Soccer /Football Hooliganism. Only this time, there’s a slight MMA and organised fighting theme thrown into the mix.

This is where Scott Adkins’ character comes in – Danny. Danny is a former Hooligan turned professional MMA fighter.  Now, um, a Hooligan again.

Why is Danny back in his old stomping grounds as a member of the ‘Green Street Elite’?  Because his younger brother was killed in an organised fight, and Danny boy wants revenge!

So working with an old buddy and cop, he tries to track down who killed his brother, training up his now ‘bottom of hierarchy’ GSE boys to fight, so they can dominate the underground fighting that has taken over the hooliganism.

A Different Spin…

This movie takes the violence of the previous films and makes it more of an underground tournament, creating a movie pretty unique within the franchise – giving it some martial arts cred at the same time!

Hell, just having Scott Adkins name on it catches the attention of Martial Arts movie fans.

While the film’s essence is different, it’s also a different kind of action – just slightly. It’s focused on a team vs team style of fighting where several members fight the other bunch of guys in a makeshift ring.

It seems like the Green Street Elite have become a bunchy of softies, even before the death of Danny’s brother, we’re shown how they seem to lose interest in fighting.  So this film kind of focuses on the Hooligans as they wind down – until Danny steps in winds them back up again!

It was very cool seeing Adkins sporting his native English accent (if not slightly altered for the role).  He creates a character full of rage who is loud and aggressive – quite convincingly.  I was impressed by how he seemed to bring another unique persona to life – he’s not just a good  physical performer but a pretty talented actor also.

While I did enjoy Scott’s acting and the overall plot and flow of the film, in all honestly I was watching for the action…

 The Martial Arts & Action

What I enjoyed about it was the gritty and ‘no holds barred’ nature of the fights.

The faces and mouths are bloodied and we see guys getting the absolute crap kicked out of them while they take to the fetal position. There’s no holding back in this film.

Something different for Adkins fans – his character is not invincible!

Danny is portrayed as a fantastic fighter but also with a sense of realism as we see him struggle to face multiple opponents, cop a beating occasionally but still fight through it.

Instead of a constant amount of flips and spinning kicks we see ‘down to earth’ style fights that were different than I expected – but refreshing and just as entertaining as some of his best work.

The Verdict?

A win for Adkins and all involved.  While it’s no Undisputed 3, it’s still one of the top Adkins films in my opinion.  I’ll be taking it off the shelf again to watch it, so check it out!
